Redefining Literacy through Taekwondo

In her literacy narrative, Gloria explains how she believes that the definition of literacy should expand past the traditional understanding of reading and writing. Additionally, it should include subject matters that someone is an expert in and has a strong knowledge of. For her, one of the areas in which she considers herself literate is Taekwondo.

Gloria started training for her black belt in the sixth grade. At first, she was uncertain about participating in this art, because she did not believe that Taekwondo was suitable for girls. After spending some time immersed in learning the different techniques and philosophy, she began to really enjoy and appreciate it.
